What have we been doing? - a list of past events
May & July 2023
The workshops will be repeated in Motueka at the end of July and early August over 2 days instead of 3 mornings.
MOTUEKA: Two Saturdays - 29th July and 5th August, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. At [venue to be confirmed].
If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes. — Andrew Carnegie
This exploration will help us identify why our actions are often unconscious and unskillful. When we lose a sense of wholesome aspiration and balance in our lives, we inadvertently create confusion and harm. Discovering universal principles that support a coherent, values-based way of life, based on mindful restraint and the cultivation of positive states of mind is a powerful remedy.
We’ll use guided meditation, focused journaling and supportive sharing with others to identify our own hidden values and commitments. Deepening our understanding of human consciousness allows us to align our personal aspirations — re-calibrating our spiritual compasses and gyroscopes. We’ll explore the role of supportive networks as we learn to engage more consciously with our complex worldly lives.

LIVING THE VOW … Bodhisattva Activity in this World, with Bonni Ross
Friday 7th April to Friday 5th May, 2023 At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre |
Take responsibility; gather wisdom; make friends.
Together, make a world.
We are the only species on this world capable of awakening.
We are the awakening of our world.
Glimpses of the qualities of awakened mind sparkle through in our minds. And then we read or watch the news. How to hold this paradox: every human has Buddhanature; but there is so much crazy!

Beginning Again! An Introductory Meditation Retreat for All
For beginners and those with experience Tuesday 31st January to Monday 6th February, 2023 At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre |
Where do I start?
I’ve never done a retreat before.
There is so much going on in the world. How can meditation really help me and others?
I wish my busy mind could be more quiet and calm.
Silent for 6 days – how could anyone do that?
This annual retreat, now in its 10th year, is an opportunity for anyone wishing to develop or refresh a regular meditation practice in a supportive retreat environment. For those new to meditation, it is an opportunity to build your confidence, receive encouragement, and ask those questions you think everyone else already knows the answer to! For people with experience, it will provide an overview, context and skilful tools that will enhance your existing practice as well as supporting you in any future retreats you attend.

I VOW … Harnessing the Power of Intention with Bonni Ross
“Let me help you,” said monkey to fish. “If you stay under water, you’ll drown!” And monkey lifts fish onto tree branch, exclaiming: “There, she’ll be right mate!” Friday 13th to Friday 27th January, 2023 At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre |
Powering all human actions of body, speech and mind there is motivation or intention, conscious or unconscious. The path of liberation begins with recognition that we are not free; we are blinded by conditioned trauma held in our bodies, negative emotional patterning and habitual mental process — ideas, beliefs and blind-spots.
In Buddhadharma, self-liberation vows are called Taking Refuge, the commitment to a life of healing through non-harming action, internally and externally. This vow is given with a snap of the fingers, quickly!

November 2022
We are all uplifted and supported by situations where we can touch into our deep and natural goodness, and recognise these qualities in all who we meet. This can revitalise us and draw us together, with fresh new energy, to continue on a life-path that is compassionate and joyful.
In these troubling times, it can be challenging to find spaces to remember our wholeness and interconnectedness, to recognise and feel trust in our human family. This day together will help us gather new experiences of who and what we are, and can be. Through meditation, creativity and gentle body-work we will discover useful and practical ways to return to the wellspring of wholeness that connects us all, and plant new seeds of love in our collective hearts and minds.

Transcendentaling
Beyond Duality, Delusion and Doubt with Bonni Ross Queenstown Dharma Centre Sat, 30th July — Thu, 11th August, 2022 Class days and times are as follows: Saturday & Sunday (except 7th Aug): 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 6:00 – 7:30 pm Transcendentaling is Namgyal Rinpoche’s reframing of the word ‘transcendence’ — to indicate a multi-dimensional dynamic arising from the ground of universal consciousness rather than a fixed state of being. |
Are we in agreement that there is suffering in the world? That the changes rolling through are increasing anxiety and paralysis? Let’s do something about that.
We are an alpha species on an awakening world. What we do with our clever minds has enormous impact, positive and negative. Human brains have brought forth wonders and unleashed immense destruction, but they also hold the coding of a planetary consciousness evolving.
Shall we explore how we can engage our minds and open our hearts as a positive force for wholesome evolutionary change? And in the process, heal our own states of suffering too.

In this weekend workshop, we will explore central Buddhist principles and practices with creativity, circle sharing, movement and meditation. Newcomers welcome.
These precious teachings are offered freely. There will be an opportunity to offer dana/koha. Full attendance for the weekend is encouraged although not compulsory.

We share this suggestion from Bonni:
“Generate a full embodied state of loving kindness, wishing that all living beings on this planet enjoy peaceful conditions and opportunities to heal themselves and develop their full awakened potential as human beings. Do not let this pure intention waver!”
Our gathering will form part of a global network with the aspiration to alleviate suffering and to direct powerful meditative energy towards peace in our world, which is so needed right now.
For enquiries or further info: please email: [email protected]

Satipatthana,
the Direct Path to Realisation with Bonni Ross April 16th - 30th At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre |
In Buddhadharma, the most basic teachings are often the most profound. This is very different from our western conditioning where “kindergarten” stuff is lesser. “Beginners mind” is going beyond expectations and preconceived ideas to experience directly, with an open mind and fresh, unburdened senses. This is the basis for realisation: things as they really are.
This teaching, declared by Sakyamuni Buddha as the direct path of liberation, will be introduced by Bonni in the first week in a clear overview — beginning with concepts, combined with meditation practice — of the 14 subjects of exploration that are outlined in the Satipatthana and Mahasatipatthana Suttas.

I Can’t Breathe.*
Taking Refuge in the Reality of Now with Bonni Ross. Part One: Opening January 15th - 29th At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre |
*We respectfully acknowledge the last words and mourn the deaths of Eric Garner, Javier Ambler, Manuel Ellis, Elijah McClain, George Floyd and some 70 other people who uttered these last words before they died in police custody in the United States between 2014 and 2020. We also acknowledge and mourn the deaths of 5.15 million people worldwide (as of November 20, 2021) who have died of COVID-19. This is a small part of the reality of now.
Breath is life and death. Breath is energy, fuelling physical well-being, emotional health and clarity in concept and understanding.
Breath is connection, interdependence. Gases, life forms — evolution unfolding for billions of years until this time, this place, this now.
Breath is awakening. This simple, instinctive action, arising and passing away with no effort required, is the direct pathway to liberation. It is a mystery, comprehended only by the wise, the Buddha said, available to everyone to find out for themselves.
We will meditate, explore, study, heal, share — many pathways, braiding like a river, nurturing all that lives.

Saturday 4 December to Friday 10 December, 2021
Fairfield House, Nelson
An Urban Retreat. In the energy and beauty and challenge of the City of Whakatū/Nelson, we will gather daily for teaching, meditation and exploration. In city life, the practice of mindful attention is essential, and we will strengthen our ability to be present and responsive to whatever arises in the cityscape.
Our practice will be based on Ven. Namgyal Rinpoche’s Meditation on Peace, supported by the universal principles of the path of Buddhadharma. There will be formal teaching, group and personal meditation, creative explorations, compassionate listening and the gifts of clarity and wisdom that arise in us all. Through this, we may unfold a calmer, gentler way to engage with our world.
To approach the season of spiritual peace and the ebullience of summer’s arrival in this way is to meet a quietly expansive joy. You are warmly invited to help create and explore this refreshment together.
All in reasonably sound physical and mental health are welcome. No formal retreat experience is needed.
Our daily schedule will be 8 am to 11-ish, with suggestions for individual practice and exploration in the afternoon. We will come together again in the evening, at 7:30 pm. To support our collective practice and to maintain a strong group process we are requesting that people make the commitment to attend all sessions with everyone present for the first session on Saturday morning (4 Dec).
To register or for more information: contact Mark at: [email protected],
Cost - $195 plus *dana/koha
The city retreat will be limited to 25 people so early registration is suggested.
About *dana/koha - These priceless teachings can’t be quantified in monetary terms. Liberation teachings have always been given freely by Bonni. An offering or dana can be made to the teacher, traditionally at the beginning of the retreat, and is a profound practice in itself. Giving can help us open; and through an open-hearted state of receptivity, we can find ourselves more able to receive.
Please bring cash if you would like to make a financial contribution to Bonni. Giving as generously as you can enables Bonni to continue sharing the precious Buddhadharma for the benefit of all. Thank you.

Thank you.
About Bonni Ross
Bonni Ross has taught extensively at the Wangapeka Study & Retreat Centre over the last 30 years and is a deeply respected ‘Centre Elder’. She guides individuals in developing focused and skilful meditation and leads retreats for depth unfoldment. Bonni began exploring the teachings of liberation in the early sixties. In the mid 70’s she met her principal teacher, Venerable Namgyal Rinpoche, whose direct, eclectic teaching and example are central to her life. Bonni teaches from a deep wealth of meditative experience. She communicates with sensitivity, creativity and humour in a way that resonates with each individual present. |
Bonni is one of the founders of the dharmasphere collective and one of the visionaries behind the innovative project ‘2020 A Year of Clear Vision’. She is inspired by ‘ordinary’ people who demonstrate exceptional courage and compassion in the midst of great suffering. Somewhat unexpectedly, Bonni now finds herself living in Nelson, and is currently deeply engaged in studying Maoritanga.

November 19th - 24th At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre Chenrezig Meditation Retreat – 5 days Or a 2-day weekend option Friday 19 (5pm) to Wednesday 24 November A Tibetan Buddhist meditation that embodies the union of wisdom and compassion. Both beginners and those wishing to deepen their meditation practice are welcome to attend. Each day we will meditate together as a group as well as having space for people to practice independently. Throughout the retreat we will touch into a variety of themes such as: Refuge – where is my place of safety?, Wholesome livelihood – what is an ethical life?, connecting into one’s heart-felt aspiration – what is most important to me in life?. Questions arising spontaneously from those attending will also be explored. As a way of supporting participants to deeply benefit from the retreat there are periods of silence built into the course.

The period from conception to emergence, Namgyal Rinpoche declared, creates a matrix of patterning within which our lives unfold. The basis for physical and mental health, sexuality and our views on everything from philosophy to food are seeded in the womb.
These experiences do not happen to “you,” because “you” as a separate, self-aware being developed gradually after birth. It is relatively easy to contact events that we remember. But what about the blind spots? How do you meet with conditioning that happened before there was a self-reflecting ego?

August 27th - 29th - Cancelled for 2021; now planning for 2022. At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre Dharmasphere are delighted to host Pa Ropata (Rob McGowan) as he guides us through a weekend of enquiry, connecting us to the whenua and its journey back to health. |
Ka ora te whenua, ka ora te tangata
When the land is well, the people will be well.
The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre is a flourishing sanctuary for many beings in these times of rapid change and challenge.
And yet, how well do we know the health of the whenua at Wangapeka, the very ground on which we and many beings depend? What is our understanding of what the Wangapeka whenua needs to be well, and so in turn, enable a sense of connection that strengthens our health and wellbeing and the health and wellbeing of many beings?

Body of Wisdom, Body of Love with Chani Grieve
August 4th - 9th At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre Body of Wisdom, Body of Love - Awakening to our Natural Inheritance - 4 days of movement, meditation and creative enquiry with Chani Grieve. |
Built by millions of years of evolution, our very own bodies offer us direct access to an inner “compass” that can reliably guide us to the fundamental intelligence, dignity and beauty of the human person. They show us directly the inherent freedom that is our natural inheritance, and lead us to a life of alignment, truth and purpose. In a world where the messages we receive from our distressed culture become more confused and confusing every day, it is a profound relief to discover true refuge and sanity, right here at home. By observing and listening to our human body we learn to attune to the rhythm and intelligence of our planet and of our deepest nature - a song of wisdom, a song of love.

Is it possible to harness the intelligence of our emotions so we can connect, relate and live more fully? Emotions can create both difficulty and beauty in our communication – leading to ill feeling and confusion; harmony or mutual understanding. Is it possible to meet all of our emotions, with kindness and interest so as to reveal the wisdom aspect of the emotion so that it can guide us – to bring forward healing in new and wholesome ways together with openness in our communication.

Holistic Clearing Meditation
A Weekend Retreat with Bonni Ross July 2nd - 4th At The Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre |
An Anti-Paralytic Practice for Human Liberation.
For awakening, you should have an understanding of what you are trying to do. You must start with clarity. You should know that you are moving toward liberation. This meditation is designed to help you to face and begin to transform the causes of paralysis: blocks, lacks and “do your own thing” strengths. This can purify, balance and strengthen your being in order to meet the sheer, naked potential of the essence of consciousness residing in you.

True altruism begins when the solid boundaries of self begin to soften into empathetic union with all that lives. We can understand the idea of interconnectedness, and yet, because of conditioning and habit, continue to experience ourselves as separate from others and the world.
This workshop will help us to see clearly the deeper reality of interbeing and open to the wonder of joyous, compassionate engagement. We will explore through meditation, individual and group experience, movement, drawing and creative activities. Participants should plan for a quiet, contemplative weekend, taking the work home with them to broaden and deepen in the evening.

Warm Heart Open Mind - Developing the Practice of Loving Kindness
Facilitated by The dharmasphere Collective Earth Hub, Haven Road, Nelson Monday evenings 7:15pm, 22nd February - 26th March The heart-centred Loving Kindness meditation is a doorway to rediscovering our natural state of love and gentleness. It leads to insight and freedom from suffering— an authentic, rich presence with whatever is arising. In daily life we often lose touch with this essence of kindness and find ourselves feeling disconnected. This can lead us to behaving judgmentally towards ourselves and others and feeling anxious, isolated, lonely, angry or sad. |
The meditation and contemplation on Loving Kindness is an age-old practice, taught by the Buddha, that helps us reconnect and rest into our natural state. As we learn to trust the innate kindness within our hearts, we open more fully to a gracious flow and friendliness - an ability to stay present and loving amidst the uncertainty, changes and decisions we face in life.
This 6-week course offers an opportunity to learn and develop the practice of Loving Kindness. Together as a community we will explore Loving Kindness through focussed meditation and creative enquiry, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and share our discoveries with each other, enriching the experience for all. We will develop our capacity for this "super power" that directly benefits both ourselves and others - a generous and genuine offering for our world.
The facilitators are all experienced practitioners who bring their skills, creativity and care to this course.
Cost : $80 for 6 weeks
Registration is essential
To enquire or register, please contact Chani at [email protected]
If finances are a barrier for you, please get in touch with us, and we will be happy to arrange something to enable you to attend.

Our Interbeing Nature - Expanding into the wider life of the planet
A thoroughly enlivening talk exploring the meeting point of mindfulness, deep ecology and our place in the world - with Tarchin Hearn. Nelson Buddhist Centre, 87 Nile Street, Nelson Sunday 28th February, 10am - 12pm Koha / Donation entry Mindfulness is far more than a stress reduction technique. It is a way of wisdom that reveals every moment of experience as an immeasurably vast and deeply intimate exchange with a living world. With an appreciation for the interbeing nature of all experience we feel the deep stirring of bodhicitta - a naturally evolving disposition for cultivating, both in ourselves and others, the magnificent human potential for panoramic, multi-realmed awareness, and ceaseless compassion and love. |

Have you tumbled down a rabbit hole into the strange interior world of Dharma study and practice? Are you finding your curiosity, your awareness of falling into ethical potholes and your repeating emotional patterns increasing?
This retreat is for those with some dedicated experience of practice who are feeling a deep imperative to awaken quickly for the benefit of all sentient beings. It assumes a certain maturity of view and commitment . . . . . . or possibly an uninformed willingness to try new adventures, fuelled by understanding that the dire state of life on Earth is more compelling than airing one’s own opinions. A Compass for Awakening. The Practice of Doing No Harm
October 22nd - November 26th at Yoga Jai Studio, 105 Rutherford Street The practice of 'doing no harm' is both a wonderful support to mindful, wholesome living, and an essential foundation for developing meditative ease and wisdom on the path of Dharma. |
The traditional framework for the practice is known as the 'Five Training Precepts'. These ethical principles serve like a compass for aligning to inner-truth. When we come from this place of clear intention, our actions have the best chance of supporting the wellbeing of both self and others.
In this 6 week course we will embark on a guided exploration of these principles, through meditation, contemplation, and community sharing.
Times: Thursdays evenings Oct 22nd - Nov 26th 7:15pm - 8:45pm
Course Fee: $50 for 6 classes or $10 per class. Plus optional Dana / Donation. If finances are a barrier for you attending, please get in touch with us

Touching Base
Movement and Meditation Day Retreat with Chani Grieve Sunday November 15th, 10am - 3pm at Fellworth House, Nelson In this day of deepening and enquiry, we will explore through movement and meditation the art and skill of Touching Base. By softening into the body through gentle, intelligent movement, we also learn to recognise the power of our own minds, and how to stay fully present, at home, in this body, on this earth. |
There is a subtle but potent deconstruction that happens with every aware moment - an interruption in the relentless tide of habitual tendencies. A moment of sanity. Staying present in the body allows us to bear loving witness to the moments unfolding through us, and to choose our response. Each moment we do this, we plant beautiful seeds for a different kind of future - one that is being shaped by what we are doing now.
Relaxing into the body, resting into our minds, our simple presence becomes an act of profound generosity, to ourselves and to our precious world.
$10 Booking Fee, plus Dana - an offering from the heart according to your means.
Bookings essential as space is limited.

The Heart Sutra is one of the most profound and influential teachings of the Mahayana Path. In its many variations it lays out the essence of the path to full awakening. So profound is the environment that is envisaged that it is often referred to as “ the Mother of the Buddhas”.
This weekend is accessible to all practitioners. It also acts as a seal on the four week study course on the Heart Sutra offered in Nelson in June.

We all have the same innate, boundless loving capacity. Kindness is a beautiful gift we can cultivate to nurture and give to ourselves and others.
We are all living with so much uncertainty today. Many of us are asking questions like “What is most important and valuable in my life and for the world?”
Together we will explore Loving Kindness through meditation, group sharing, creative activities, and simply by being in the constant beauty, nurture and kindness of the whenua—the natural environment of the Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre.
This retreat is suitable for beginners and people with meditation experience.

How can we engage compassionately with the struggles of our world, when our own hearts and minds are contracted in pain and anger, uncertainty and depression? Buddhadharma’s clear mapping of reality and skillful methods of exploration have crossed many cultural boundaries and adapted to new circumstances without losing their essence and power. The ideas and practices arise ever-fresh, practical and clear. For anyone willing to listen, question, learn and practice, life becomes calmer and clearer, steadier as the winds of change blow. The potential is only limited by one’s own willingness to put the teachings to the test of direct experience, in dialogue with others who have walked this path. This leads to a confidence that allows opening to wider horizons, with a refreshed, reliable kindness and clarity.
