Our Aspiration

dharmasphere has no boundaries.  All living beings contribute as givers and receivers.  As individuals, we have learned through years of consciously refining our practice together that there is potent alchemy in community:  the whole truly is greater than the sum of its parts! We are motivated to share, not only within the community, but through an open field of compassionate engagement as wide as the world, as vast as space.

We are committed to the realisation of non-conceptual, non-dual, universal enlightenment through compassionate action and esoteric, pan-sectarian practice.  Many of us work in community service, and wish to share the liberation teachings and meditative skills that we’ve found invaluable with others. We became friends through different activities at the Wangapeka Study and Retreat Centre in the South Island, New Zealand, make our homes in nearby communities and are closely connected to like-minded people in Canada, Australia and elsewhere in the world.

The magnet that brings us together as The dharmasphere Collective is a long relationship with our Canadian-born friend, catalyst and teacher, Bonni Ross, and her partner Matthew Eades.  In 1996, Bonni was invited to New Zealand for two months, teaching in Christchurch, the West Coast, Nelson, at Wangapeka, in Auckland and Katikati.  Regular visits followed until 2011, when a small group of us invited Matthew and Bonni to experiment with living and teaching in Nelson for six months every year, for six years.  They now live full-time in Nelson.

The dharmasphere Collective expresses the all-inclusive spirit of our aspiration and the universal principle that all sentient beings have inherent potential for freedom. Our task and joy is to share in skilful ways, meaningful and relevant to the people that we meet, keeping the integrity of the teachings alive and well, as one candle flame passes light and warmth to another.

In this time on our earth it is clear that divisions, sectarianism, us-and-them habits of mind simply will not get us out of the mess that we’re in. We need each other, and we each must  heal the divisions within us, as well as in the world around us. It is here that the Buddhadharma has a treasury of gems to offer, as relevant, practical and transformative as they have always been.

We invite you to explore this basket of gems with us!
